Employee Spotlight: Beth Mays

Our Environmental Outreach Coordinator, Beth Mays, has been hard at work prepping for our summer camps since her start at AFF in June, 2022! Get to know Beth in our brand new monthly employee spotlight series:

How long have you worked at AFF?

“About a month and a half!”

What do you do at AFF?

“I am the Environmental Outreach Coordinator. As such, I help with educational programs, coordinate summer camps, help coordinate clean-ups, and more!”

What did you do before coming to AFF?

“I worked as a Naturalist for Prince George’s County Parks for about 15 years.”

Why do you love working at AFF?

“I love how AFF is a great combination of an ecological mission and a working farm! I also enjoy the beautiful scenery of where I work.”

What is your favorite spot on the property?

“I think I have yet to explore the whole property, but at the moment, when I need a minute to breathe in some fresh air, I head out to the gardens surrounding the farmhouse and sit in the sun with a view of the Potomac River.”

What do you do in your free time away from AFF?

“I enjoy spending time with my husband and my three year old daughter. They keep my life away from work interesting and fun! With them, I enjoy exploring nature (bonus points with my little one if there’s a playground (nature or manmade). Additionally, my husband and I recently obtained our very own business and so a lot of my free time goes into working on establishing it!”

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

“Kayaking and I wish I could do it more often!”

Why do you feel it’s so important to educate others about the environment?

“There’s a quote by Baba Dioum that says, “In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.” Ever since I heard that, it has been easy for me to affirm why I love educating others about the environment and why I do it even when I’m not on the clock!”
