Land As Muse: Art Exhibit & Sale
A curated collection of art inspired by the landscapes of the Potomac region
Presented in partnership with the Accokeek Artists Alliance
For generations, artists have been drawn to the landscapes along the Potomac River; its rolling farmland, wooded hills, tidal marshes, and expansive skies.
The Land as Muse Art Exhibit continues that tradition.
Presented in partnership with the Accokeek Artists Alliance, this display invites regional artists to interpret the theme of land as inspiration. Through painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition explores the ways landscape shapes memory, inspires creativity, and forms identity.
Presented within the historic setting of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s riverside campus, the exhibition connects contemporary artistic voices with the deep cultural and environmental history of the land.
What You’ll Experience

Each piece offers a different perspective on the relationship between people and land; reminding us that creativity and stewardship often grow from the same roots.
Along the way, you will encounter the region’s agricultural and environmental history, the vibrant artistic legacy of the WPA era, reflections on the evolution of environmental education, and the ongoing work of stewardship along the Potomac River.
Local culinary offerings and regional wines and beverages will be thoughtfully woven throughout the experience, inviting guests to gather, explore, and celebrate the land that continues to inspire this community.
Artist Demonstrations & Workshop
Art does not begin or end on the gallery wall. As part of the Land as Muse exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the creative process firsthand through artist-led demonstrations and outdoor painting sessions hosted by the Accokeek Artists Alliance. These programs invite guests to see how artists observe, interpret, and respond to the landscapes that inspire their work.
Artist in Action
Watch creativity unfold in real time during an Artist in Action demonstration. Over the course of two to three hours, an artist will create a live painting while engaging with guests, sharing insights into technique, inspiration, and artistic process.
Visitors are encouraged to observe, ask questions, and experience how the surrounding landscape influences the work as it develops.
Plein Air Painting Event
The Alliance will also host a plein air painting event led by a local artist. Participants will paint outdoors across the Foundation’s scenic riverside campus, drawing inspiration from the landscape of the Potomac region.
The session will include guidance and real-time feedback from the lead artist, followed by a display of the freshly completed works. The event will conclude with juried awards recognizing three outstanding pieces.
Registration details are coming soon.
The Artistic Legacy of Place
The relationship between this land and artistic expression is not new.
In the early 20th century, artists, writers, and thinkers gathered on this property, drawn by the quiet beauty of the landscape and the creative energy it inspired.
Today, Land as Muse Art Exhibit honors that tradition, inviting a new generation of artists to reflect on the landscapes that continue to shape our region.

In Partnership with the Accokeek Artists Alliance
The Accokeek Artists Alliance (AAA) is a vibrant community of local artists dedicated to fostering creativity and artistic collaboration in Southern Maryland.
Their partnership brings together established and emerging artists whose work reflects the region’s character, beauty, and evolving story.
Together, AAA and the Alice Ferguson Foundation celebrate the ways the Arts deepen our understanding of the importance of place.
