SALARY RANGE: $55,000-65,000, commensurate with experience

I. Alice Ferguson Foundation Mission
Our mission is to connect people to the natural world, sustainable agricultural practices, and the cultural heritage of their local watershed through education, stewardship, and advocacy. Established in 1954, we are a public charity chartered in the state of Maryland.

II. Purpose of the Position
The Facilities and Land Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and strategic maintenance of Alice Ferguson Foundation’s 330-acre campus, which includes buildings, trail systems, and a diverse mix of natural landscapes. Many of these structures are more than 100 years old and require thoughtful preservation.

This position combines strategic oversight with hands-on work. The ideal candidate will plan, prioritize, and manage maintenance and land stewardship activities — and personally complete a significant portion of the day-to-day work alongside staff, contractors, and volunteers. The role is results-oriented, focusing on measurable outcomes in safety, functionality, cost-efficiency, and long-term stewardship.

IV. Scope of Work
Work takes place at Alice Ferguson Foundation/Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek, MD. This position is highly physical and active, conducted mainly outdoors in all types of weather. Must possess the ability to lift upwards of 50 lbs.

V. Relevant Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years of facilities, farm, or land management experience (preferably on large, multi-building properties).
  • Strong hands-on skills in general maintenance, landscaping, and/or agricultural
    operations.
  • Knowledge of building systems, environmental management, and small-scale farming.
  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and complete work efficiently.
  • Experience managing vendors, budgets, and small teams.
  • Comfortable working outdoors year-round across diverse terrain.
  • Tractor, small equipment, or livestock experience preferred.
  • Basic Google Suite and General Computer Knowledge preferred.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based structure, with flexibility under shifting deadlines.
  • Excellent oral, written and record-keeping skills

VI. Key Responsibilities and Results

  1. Facilities Management (40%)
    Results: All buildings and systems are safe, functional, and well-maintained.
    ● Develop and implement a preventive maintenance plan for buildings and systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, etc.).
    ● Perform hands-on repairs and maintenance such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and minor electrical work.
    ● Supervise or coordinate contractors for specialized projects.
    ● Maintain accurate maintenance records, schedules, and inspection documentation.
    ● Manage facility budgets efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.

    Performance Indicators:
    ● 95% of scheduled maintenance tasks completed on time.
    ● Zero unresolved safety or code violations annually.
    ● Less than 10% unplanned equipment or system downtime for equipment and systems that are internally controllable
  2. Land and Trail Stewardship (30%)
    Results: Land and trail systems are safe, accessible, and ecologically healthy.
    ● Oversee and perform hands-on upkeep of 330 acres including open spaces, wooded areas, and trail networks.
    ● Manage mowing, clearing, drainage, erosion control, and invasive species removal.
    ● Develop and implement a land management and trail maintenance plan.
    ● Assist in coordinating volunteer and partner projects that support land conservation and maintenance goals.

    Performance Indicators:
    ● All trails within AFF purview remain accessible and hazard-free year-round.
    ● Annual land management goals achieved within budget.
    ● Demonstrated improvement in ecological health and trail conditions annually.
  3. Farm Operations (15%)
    Results: The small farm operates safely, efficiently, and supports the organization’s educational or community programs.
    ● Oversee day-to-day operations of a small hobby farm, which includes managing livestock and garden.
    ● Perform hands-on farm work such as feeding, cleaning, fencing, and equipment upkeep.
    ● Maintain safe and humane conditions for animals in accordance with best practices and organizational standards.
    ● Manage seasonal schedules, assist in coordinating volunteer or program activities, and track farm expenses.
    ● Ensure compliance with agricultural and animal care regulations.

    Performance Indicators:
    ● The farm operates safely with healthy animals and a managed garden.
    ● Annual farm goals (e.g., animal care standards) met.
    ● Positive educational or visitor experiences supported by farm activities.
  4. Operations, Safety, and Team Leadership (15%)
    Results: Facilities and land operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
    Supervise and work alongside maintenance staff and volunteers.
    ● Train and uphold safety, environmental, and equipment-use protocols.
    ● Maintain clear communication with program and administrative teams about property schedules, repairs, and site access.
    ● Respond promptly to emergencies or urgent maintenance needs.

    Performance Indicators:
    ● 100% of staff and volunteers trained in safety procedures.
    ● Timely communication and resolution of operational issues.
    ● Positive internal feedback on facilities and land management reliability.

VII. Success in This Role Looks Like
● The property operates safely, efficiently, and predictably year-round.
● Facilities and infrastructure are proactively maintained with minimal downtime.
● Trails and natural areas remain accessible, safe, and ecologically balanced.
● The education farm thrives as a safe, productive, and educational part of the
organization’s mission.
● Staff, visitors, and community members experience a well-cared-for property that reflects the organization’s values and stewardship goals.

VIII. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Full-time, non-exempt position, working 40 hours per week.

II. Position Summary
Join our team of Environmental Educators to lead engaging, hands-on field studies for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as adult groups. Programs are conducted primarily on-site at the Alice Ferguson Foundation, with some programs scheduled at parks and at schools throughout the DMV. Our environmental education experiences are designed to promote stewardship of natural resources through NGSS-aligned lessons and Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE). Topics include
watersheds, habitats, farms, water quality, climate change, invasive species, and team-building, all while highlighting the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Potomac River watershed.


In addition to teaching, the Environmental Educator may support other Foundation-led initiatives, such as litter cleanups, invasive plant workshops, summer and spring camps, and community events.

Programs are scheduled year-round, primarily on weekdays, with occasional weekend opportunities and rotating evening programs. Off-site work may occur throughout Southern Maryland, Central Maryland, Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia, and surrounding areas.

III. Qualifications & Skills

  • A high school degree is required. A Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental or interdisciplinary studies, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant teaching experience and classroom management (preferably outdoors)
  • A working knowledge of natural history, science, ecology, and the watershed
  • Ability to implement and model excellent risk management practices and maintain a safe environment for all students and participants in variable terrain
  • Ability to perform physical work in the outdoors and in all weather conditions
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity within your teaching and our community
  • A willingness to be coached and openness to feedback
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm, problem-solving skills, and excellent work ethic
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle for travel
  • Employment is contingent upon an employee background check

IV. Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather types
  • Ability to lead hikes on different terrain
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to speak, hear, and use a computer for standard business communications

V. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently lead groups of all ages on habitat hikes, farm exploration, STEM activities, and team building
  • As a team, lead Summer and Spring campers ages 4 to 13 during day and overnight programs
  • Plan and deliver environmental education programming tailored to the needs of each group
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning
  • Lead by example to demonstrate positive and responsible behavior
  • Manage participant safety in outdoor settings using sound judgment and application of risk management policies and guidelines; administer and document first aid as needed
  • Actively participate in the team community by participating in meetings, support activities, and training as assigned
  • Engage in evaluations and assessments of program success to promote personal growth and learning
  • Responsible for setting up the program materials and cleaning up the program spaces
  • Assist with data collection and administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Flexibility to work throughout the week, some evenings, and some weekend programs
  • Opportunities to participate and represent the Foundation at events (Examples include litter cleanups, educational workshops, fundraising events, and outreach events)
  • Opportunities to assist with the farm animals, trail maintenance, and the children’s garden

○ Encourage participants to connect with and feel comfortable in nature.

○ Create inclusive learning environments that engage all participants and encourage them to ask questions.

○ Work collaboratively with other educators and staff to achieve program goals.

○ Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
Outdoor Techniques & Safety
○ Utilize the environmental campus as a natural classroom to enhance learning experiences.
○ Ensure participant safety by following established safety procedures and communicating concerns effectively.
○ Set appropriate boundaries for activities to ensure safety and enjoyment.
○ Dress appropriately for outdoor programming (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc)
Customer Service & Relationship Building
○ Provide high-quality customer service to participants, educators, chaperones, parents, and administrators.
○ Promote a positive and enthusiastic attitude while delivering programs.
○ Effectively communicate the mission and values of the Alice Ferguson Foundation.
